Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who pays for the airfare?

Volunteers are generally responsible for their own air travel costs. In some circumstances, where funds are available, AAI will pay for airfares for volunteers.

What is the minimum amount of time I can volunteer for?

The minimum time required is usually 4 weeks. However, in the case of a response to an emergency, shorter times may be acceptable.

Do I have to pay for my own accommodation and food?

AAI will cover in-country accommodation and food.

What do I have to take?

Load lists specific to each programme location are provided prior to departure.

Would I be able to get a paid job after a period of volunteering?

After a period of volunteering, AAI will endeavour to obtain paid positions for volunteers willing to work for longer terms. Please note, that the availability of paid positions is dependant upon programme funding.

Does AAI cover medical/travel insurance?

Volunteers are responsible for their own medical/travel cover but AAI maintains a comprehensive insurance policy to cover its volunteers in the event of injury or medical emergency.

Will I have access to internet and/or phone to communicate with family back home?

Access to the internet and phone will be dependant on the services available in the country of operations. AAI will ensure that volunteers have access to communicate with family to advise them of their save arrival and departure. For long term assignments and where the security situation is not ideal, AAI will endeavour to provide access to a method of communication.
