Summary:
One month ago, Tropical Storms hit the Philippines in both the Manila region and to the North of the country causing an unprecedented humanitarian disaster. The storms have caused the worst flooding in the country in over four decades. The death toll has reached more than 1000 people and more than 2 million people affected and displaced.
Many people in affected areas are still living in waist deep polluted flood waters and as a result, the risks of infectious disease outbreaks are very high. There is already an outbreak of Leptospirosis, which is overwhelming the existing healthcare infrastructure that is continually being stretched as new storms occur. This is exacerbated by the extensive damage to infrastructure through flooding and mudslides, which have already buried hundreds of homes and caused widespread displacement.
AAI is working with local partner groups to provide much needed primary healthcare assistance and water and sanitation initiatives with an emphasis on disease control and surveillance for the many thousands of affect communities. AAI is seeking a medical officer who is able to deploy to the Philippines within the next week to assist with this humanitarian disaster.
Role and Responsibilities of the Volunteer:
- Provide direct emergency and primary healthcare in diagnostics and treatments as required.
- Monitor and supervise healthcare delivery by local health workers.
- Ensure accurate record management for reporting and case management.
- Assist with medical supply management (inventories, warehousing, and reconciliation).
- Assists in assessment and developing of immediate and long-term health projects in the Republic of Philippines that AAI can support, mainly in terms of community and primary healthcare support, training, etc.
- Assist with epidemiological and outbreak surveillance.
- Able to work effectively in unstable security environments, and under intense administrative and programmatic pressures.
- Must demonstrate flexibility to adapt to changing requirements.
- Must be willing to travel often and endure basic living conditions at field sites for extended periods of time.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Medical degree required with advanced education in a related field preferred.
- Knowledge in any one of the following areas is an advantage: tropical medicine, public health, obstetrics, maternal and child healthcare.
- Experience in international programs delivering primary healthcare, public healthcare, maternal and child health, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, and communicable diseases preferred.
- Well developed skills in report writing, training development and the preparation of other technical documents.
- Ability to effectively present technical information and respond to questions from counterparts, the United Nations and the Philippines Department of Health.
- Previous experience in disaster environments preferred.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills and profound cross-cultural awareness; ability to relate to and motivate local staff effectively.

Summary
Tropical Storm Ondoy – which is known locally as Typhoon Ketsana - hit the Philippines province of Quezon province causing widespread damage, including in nearby Capital of Manila.
It has been reported that the storm has caused the worst flooding in the country in over four decades, with the deaths toll raising to over 200 to date and over 500,000 people affected and displaced, mostly in Metro Manila and surrounding provinces in southern Luzon.
The risk of outbreaks of infectious diseases is expected to be exacerbated by the widespread damage to infrastructure through flooding and mudslides, which have already buried hundreds of homes and caused widespread displacement.
AAI are working with local partner groups to provide medical assistance, support and advice in support of relief efforts to the many thousands of affect communities. This is a call for expression of interest for those medical personnel who are able to deploy to the Philippines within the next 24-72 hours.

English Teacher- International Volunteer Position (Thailand)

Summary
The English language volunteer teaching position is located at the Hsa Thoo Lei Learning Centre for Burmese refugee children situated on the outskirts of Mae Sot on the Thai-Burma border. The centre is operated by the Burmese Migrant Workers Education Committee (BMWEC), a community organisation established to help educate the children of those fleeing from human rights abuse inside Burma. The Centre teaches infants through to secondary school aged children, in subjects including English, Thai, Karen, mathematics, science, history, geography, computer skills, economics and art. Subjects other than languages are taught in Burmese. The teachers are mostly Burmese and Karen, educated either in Burma or in Refugee Camps. The World Education Consortium supplies teacher training and curriculums.
The Has Thoo Lei school has a new but rudimentary building, the students wear uniforms however, funding is scarce. The school receives no assistance from the Thai Government and there are little or no teaching aids.
Approximately 200 of the students live in at the school boarding house, others have families living in the area working in factories, construction, or eking a living wherever possible. All these people are stateless, doing whatever they can to educate themselves in the hope of a better future for their people. Refer www.bmwec.org
The volunteer position is to teach English and some other subjects to primary and secondary students. The curriculum is set out by World Education Consortium, in consultation with teachers from BMWEC and other schools. Some administrative assistance may also be required in the BMWEC office to correct reports that have been translated into English for sponsors.
Role and Responsibilities of the Volunteer
- Provide direct English Language experience and teaching to school students in the BMWEC system.
- Provide assistance, when necessary, in administration to BMWEC staff.
- Report to AAI management on the current circumstances relevant to the program.
- Provide assistance, information and support to incoming AAI staff.
- Provide support to other AAI projects on the Thai-Burma Boarder.
Qualifications and Experience
- A high level of English Language in both reading and writting.
- Able to provide a Police Clearance for suitability to the responsible of the position.

SUMMARY
In March of 2007 Australian Aid International (AAI) commenced a long term project in rural healthcare to underserved populations in Timor-Leste.
Through collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) AAI are targeting those underserved areas and populations who have sub-standard levels of health care. AAI's project is focused on support and supervision at the District Health Service (DHS) level and providing much needed quality assurance to Government health programs. This is being achieved through re-establishing and supporting DHS outreach services including mobile medical clinics, health promotion activities and capacity building of local health staff. AAI have also been active in the assisting the MoH with evaluations of health services.
