Indonesia

AAI has now achieved all of its major goals in its Integrated Water & Sanitation program in Java, Indonesia. This has included the repair and cleaning of 1000 wells, deepening of 62 wells, constructing and delivering 500 septic system kits and constructing 320 latrines. This completion of this program signifies a major milestone in AAI operations which has contributed to assisting the early recovery and reconstruction of the earthquake affected areas of Java.

Humanitarian Training

In February 2007 AAI completed a highly successful series of courses to prepare humanitarian workers for overseas missions. The courses included an Introduction to Humanitarian Assistance Operations, Hostile Environment Awareness Training, Cultural Awareness and Psychological First Aid training. A number of students from these courses have now been deployed on humanitarian missions with AAI to Timor Leste.

AAI establishes an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) in Jogyakarta, Indonesia.

AAI has enhanced its emergency response capability in the Asia Pacific region by establishing an EOC at its Jogyakarta office. This has included the introduction of a collaborative IT system, the acquisition of emergency response equipment and the recruitment and training of local medical professionals to augment our emergency response capability. The EOC was stood up for the recent floods in Jakarta in support of our assessment team that was dispatched to the area.

Timor Leste

AAI has now deployed a medical team to Timor Leste to commence a major 12 month Rural Health care program sponsored by Oilex Ltd, an oil exploration company conducting surveys and drilling in the Timor Sea . The program is to focus on the remote rural areas of Timor Leste and will employ mobile medical clinics to access those areas. Director of Operations, Frank Tyler is working closely with the Ministry of Health to develop and implement the project so that it supports the National Health Strategy of Timor Leste.

The Humanitarian Journal

AAI has now proudly published a high quality journal design as a focal point and reference source for the professional humanitarian. Titled “The Humanitarian Journal”, this publication contains articles on such issues as the UN Cluster System, NGO's and the military, preparing for a mission and Australia 's new White Paper on Overseas Aid. AAI would like to thank the efforts of its many contributors.

Volunteer of the Quarter

AAI's “volunteer” of the Quarter has been awarded to Daniel Pongsama who works in our Indonesian program. Daniel, a native Indonesian, initially started as a volunteer with AAI and has now transitioned into a hard working and highly effective project coordinator of our Jogyakarta staff. Under Daniels supervision, a number of our Water and Sanitation initiatives were effectively implemented to achieve a outstanding result. Congratulations and well done Daniel for your commitment in assisting those people in greatest need.
