Iraq Health and Hygiene Reconstruction Program
AAI has been working with Save the Children (Iraq) to assess a prospective School Rehabilitation Program in and around Basra and Um Qasr in Southern Iraq. This program will encompass the refurbishment of approximately 30 schools over a two year period and is designed to ensure the long-term improvement of children's lives in Iraq.

AAI Delivers Successful Introduction to Humanitarian Operations Training Course
AAI delivered a two day Introduction to Humanitarian Operations training course in Melbourne on 15-16 May 2010. Twenty participants from all over Australia and overseas attended the training course. AAI's Introduction to Humanitarian Operations training course serves as a general overview for individuals interested in becoming involved in the humanitarian sphere. The course aims to educate, prepare and inspire individuals who wish to work overseas.

AAI’s next Introduction to Humanitarian Operations Course will be conducted on the 18th and 19th of September 2010.

AAI Staff Awarded Humanitarian Overseas Service Medal
AAI received recognition from the Department of the Prime Minister for its outstanding contribution in remote areas of Kashmir, Pakistan during the South Asian Earthquake in 2005. AAI Staff were awarded with the Humanitarian Overseas Service Metal in recognition of their comprehensive humanitarian programs that were provided during such a devastating time.

AAI Partners with International NGO – Focus on Africa Development

At the start of 2010, AAI formed a partnership with NGO – Focus on Africa Development (FOAD) as a part of AAI’s expansion into Africa. Since the start of the year AAI has been working collaboratively with FOAD to plan and establish a framework for future initiatives.

Headquarters
Marc Preston, CEO, has recently returned from Iraq where he was conducting the initial assessments for AAI’s upcoming health and hygiene program.

Frank Tyler, Director of Operations, has been in the Philippines for the past month providing advice on transitioning the emergency flood response into regular country programs.

AAI program managers, Dominic Bowen and Nathan Mullins, are currently in Melbourne and recently directed the Introduction to Humanitarian Operations training course. They are currently reviewing and updating the course to reflect the most recent trends and developments in the humanitarian sphere.

Humanitarian Training

AAI will be conducting an Introduction to Humanitarian Operations training course in Melbourne on 18-19 September 2010. Training will be held at Camberwell Community Centre, Melbourne. Please visit the AAI website for additional training information and registration forms.

It is essential that all volunteers wishing to register with AAI complete the Introduction to Humanitarian Operations course prior to being selected for a position.  AAI encourages all interested volunteers to continue to apply for positions as they became available.

Professional Humanitarian Development
Recent WHO statistics show that nearly nine million children died before their fifth birthday and an estimated 1100 million people still defecate in the open, increasing the potential exposure to intestinal worms, hepatitis and cholera.

On the 9th of June, staff from Australian Aid International attended a Hygiene Promotion Learning Day facilitated by WaterAid Australia.  It was a beneficial event that reminded our key staff about important hygiene promotion principles.

AAI is a non-profit organisation, which specifically targets communities that are difficult to access due to remoteness and other community vulnerabilities.

We urgently need funds from the public and private industry. Donations go directly to:
•    Essential emergency supplies and equipment.
•    Vital medicines.
•    Keeping local humanitarian programs operational, with a focus on health, water, sanitation, hygiene, and disaster risk reduction and reconstruction projects.
•    The training of local staff including doctors, nurses, engineers, interpreters and drivers.
